Very rare parchment award certificate for the 16th Irish Division. These certificates were presented to members of the Division who had been awarded gallantry medals or were mentioned in despatches. The actual badge itself was a small green felt voided diamond which was stitched to the upper right sleeve. It was sometimes referred to as \'The Ginchy Diamond\' The original award certificates are exceptionally rare. This example was awarded to Staff Captain C. C. F. Smith of the 48th Brigade in recognition of \'gallant conduct and devotion to duty\' on November 20th, 1917. The certificate is personally handwritten and signed by the Divisional Commander of the 16th Irish Division,Major General Sir William Bernard Hickie. This distinguished officer was one of the most accomplished of the BEF\'s Divisional Commanders during the Great War.
