Price: US $404.00
Very rare and original, 1880\'s Cabinet Card Photograph of Native American Sioux Indian Brave White War Bonnet by George E. Spencer of Chicago. This wonderful, period, Card Mount Photograph measures approx. 3 7/8” by 5 1/2” and is mounted on its original photographer\'s mount (overall size of mount is 4 1/4” by 6 1/2”). The subject is identified in the negative as \"War Bonnet\" and the mount carries the mark of the Photographer - George E. Spencer of Chicago.

White War Bonnet was a Lakota Sioux Warrior who appeared with Buffalo Bill\'s Wild West in the 1880\'s and 1890\'s. He may have been sent to Fort Sheridan (in Highwood, Illinois) after the Massacre at Wounded Knee (sometimes referred to as “The Battle of Wounded Knee”). George Spencer had a studio at Fort Sheridan and is known to have photographed many Native American prisoner’s there. Spencer advertised a series of Cabinet Cards titled “Views of Camp Douglas Rifle Range, Including groups of all Range officers, Division and Department Teams of Army Competitions 1889-1890./ Group of the Hostile Sioux taken Prisoners at Pine Ridge and brought to Fort Sheridan, who afterward accompanied Buffalo Bill on his European tour”. It is also possible that the Photograph was taken when the Wild West Show was performing in Chicago.

The Image is a striking, 3/4 length, seated portrait of the proud Lakota Warrior wearing a wonderful Hairpipe bone breastplate, beaded armband and single coup feather.

This rare and wonderful, Native American Lakota Sioux Indian Brave, Cabinet Card Photograph is in excellent condition. The Photograph exhibits razor sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The Photo is clean and crisp and exceptionally well preserved while the card mount has some light soiling.
