1932 Harold A Pinney Violin Inscribed \"My Best Specimen\"
Price: US $921.00

The violin was made by Harold A Pinney in 1932 in Plymouth Vt.

It bears the makers label and the handwritten inscription:

\"extra special old wood-100 yrs old + My best specimen H.A.P.\"

I have enjoyed this violin and given the special inscription that Harold Pinney placed inside this violin has made it very special and certainly a one of a kind historical instrument.

This is a full-sized violin. The back measures 14 1/8 inches or 358 mm.

Attached is William Henley\'s Universal Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers review of Harold Pinney and his violins.

This one is indeed special. It is in mint condition, and was considered by Pinney himself to be \"his best specimen\". The violin is without cracks or repairs. It was been lightly French-polished long ago which protected it well and gives it a very clean, nearly new appearance. The violin looks much newer than its 80+ years of age. The workmanship is the best I have seen on any of his violins and the wood is very special-intensely flamed maple from the same tree for the back, ribs, neck and scroll, and fine straight grained spruce loaded with silks and bear claw figure. The entire instrument is hand made, by a single maker, something that is very difficult to find in violins made anywhere else during this period when the vast majority of violins sold in the United States were mass-produced, commercial trade instruments from Germany and France. When new, Harold Pinney violins were sold for as much as $400. That amount of money was a very good monthly wage in those days, about as much as a new Ford sedan.

This violin has a tone that is very clean, clear, and well balanced. While neither frankly dark nor bright, it is a perfect blend of colors providing both necessary brilliance and creamy mellow warmth. The violin has a sweet and warm sound when played gently, but generates surprising brilliance, power and projection when played with a more aggressive bow. This is a very flexible and capable violin, comfortable in an intimate setting where the sweetness, warmth and complexity of the tone is showcased, or in a larger venue where power, brilliant penetration and volume is needed to be heard. I am impressed by its ability to fill a room with chiming overtones and ringing harmonics. This is a very good sounding violin, as much of a delight to play as it is to hear. It is certainly an appropriate tool for a serious player.

I am including a very nice violin case and will professionally pack it and insure it for proper delivery.
