1936 BOSTON REDSKINS-LAST YEAR in Boston-NFL Football Program vs. Chicago Cards

Description:
Rare early NFL Football Program for the Boston Redskins vs. Chicago Cardinals, played at Fenway Park in Boston on Nov. 1, 1936.

The Redskins defeated the Cardinals 13-10.

The Redskins began in 1932 as the Boston Braves. It is the fifth oldest franchise in the National Football League, trailing only the Bears, Packers, Cardinals, and Giants.

The name was changed to the Redskins the following season. The team was owned by George Preston Marshall. Marshall had business interests in Washington DC and wanted to move the team there.

The team did not draw in Boston, playing second fiddle to the baseball Red Sox and hockey Bruins. Marshall became so frustrated over the lack of attendance that in this final season he threatened to move the team if fans did not come out to watch the team.

The fans complied, failing to attend the games. The team was very talented, with Hall of Famers Turk Edwards, Cliff Battles, and Wayne Millner. Other players incuded Charlie Malone, Ed Justice, Riley Smith, Ernie Pinkert, Swede Olsson, Ed Britt, and All-Pro center Frank Bausch. The coach was Hall of Famer Ray Flaherty.

The Redskins won the NFL East that season and had home field for the NFL Title game with the Green Bay Packers. Convinced no one would attend the game, Marshall, astonishingly, arranged to have the NFL Title game moved from his home field and held at the neutral location of the Polo Grounds in New York, where the Redskins lost to the Packers 21-6.

The following year in 1937 the Redskins moved to Washington, drafted QB Sammy Baugh, and with Baugh added to the talented roster described above, won the NFL Championship.

This program has 8 pages with player illustrations. Complete with rosters and lineups. A preview of the next weeks game vs. the champion Packers pictures Don Hutson. See scans.

The program was printed on thin paper stock. There are some vertical creases at the bottom edges that were reinforced long ago with small pieces of tape. Shown in scans. Also the interior spine on one page was reinforced with tape which has yellowed. All pages are shown in the scans. Has light centerfold, but is very clean and intact. It is remarkable that it survived at all.

All Boston Redskins home programs are rare, as few attended the games.
