1940s NATIVE AMERICAN HOPI INDIAN HAND CARVED ROUTE 66 KACHINA / KATSINA DOLL #1
Price: US $20.50
Rare and wonderful, ca1940’s Native American Hopi Indian, Hand Carved, Diminutive “Route 66 Kachina” Doll / Figure.

Hopi katsina figures / Katchina Dolls (Hopi language: tithu or katsintithu) are figures carved, typically from cottonwood root, by Hopi people originally made to instruct young girls and new brides about katsinas or katsinam, the immortal beings that bring rain, control other aspects of the natural world and society, and act as messengers between humans and the spirit world. During the 20th century, the manufacture and sale of Kachina Dolls by the Hopi were a source of income from tourists to the southwestern United States.

The story of the Route 66 Kachinas / Katsinas is a fascinating one. In the late 1930’s, as tourist traffic in the American Southwest increased, stylized katsinas dolls were produced for sale at roadside stands. Fondly known as Route 66 Katsinas, these dolls are easily discernible from their authentic counterparts. Route 66 Katsinas evolved into standardized figures. Although Route 66 dolls are not fully authentic Hopi katcinas, many were made by tribe members and there is a market for them. They are considered desirable by many who collect Southwestern folk art, especially the older pieces. Prices for katsina dolls vary greatly. Late 19th and early 20th century Hopi katsina can be worth thousands. Those carved in the 1920s bring several hundred dollars, and contemporary dolls can be purchased for a couple hundred or less to thousands of dollars as contemporary Native American Art. Early Route 66 dolls, when they appear at sale, have fetched as much as a few hundred dollars.

This fascinating, mid 20th century hand carved and painted Route 66 Kachina Doll measures approx. 2 3/4\" tall and features a helmeted head and a decorated red tunic. It is made of pine and has no markings.

While it is very difficult to date Route 66 Kachina Dolls, the example offered here is an earlier example likely dating from the 1940’s. We unconditionally guarantee that this is a vintage piece approx 75 years old and is NOT of modern manufacture.

This rare and charming, 1940’s Route 66 Kachina / Katsina Doll is in good to very good condition. The surface paint has some scuffing and the Figure has lost its integrally carved horns / ears. It appears to have had an applied feather at the top of his head which is lacking. Please see the numerous photographs below for a good representation of the form and condition of this wonderful piece of Southwestern Folk Art.
