1960 FIRST YEAR LOS ANGELES CHARGERS AFL Football Program vs. Houston Oilers

Description:
First year American Football League Program for a game played at the Coliseum in Los Angeles between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Houston Oilers, on Nov. 13, 1960.

The Chargers defeated the Oilers 24-21 in what would be a preview of the very first AFL Championship Game.

Both teams finished 10-4 in the AFL\'s inaugural season. The Oilers won the first Title game 24-16 in Houston on Jan. 1. The two teams were the best in the league in the early years of the AFL, the Oilers winning the first two titles (both over the Chargers), and losing the third in double overtime, while the Chargers played in five of the first six title games, winning one.

Neither of the two original AFL teams remained in their initial home city. Despite the Chargers wealth of talent and high scoring offense, they were unable to compete with the NFL Rams and other sports teams in L.A., moving to San Diego the following season. Houston moved to Tennessee in 1997.

Program has 32 pages with player illustrations and bios.

Cover artwork by noted award winning sports cartoonist Karl Hubenthal of the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner.

Complete with rosters and attached yellow lineup scorecard insert used in all the Chargers home programs that first season.

See scans for examples.

The program is virtually as clean and crisp as the day it was made, there is a small light \'thumb\' bend lower left corner.

Early Charger programs are very scarce. Even in populated Los Angeles, few came to the games. \"The Coliseum in L.A. was so empty for our games and the stands so empty the people looked like flies sitting in buttermilk\", Chargers star halfback Paul Lowe (pictured) remembered with a laugh in The American Football League, A Year by Year History 1960-1969. \"They\'d move everyone in the stands to one side of the field to make it look crowded\".

A rare souvenir of the first year of the American Football League featuring the league\'s two best teams in a fine condition grade. Top example.
