The iconic red kangaroo design, featured on this 25th anniversary commemorative, was originally introduced as part of the Australian Nugget coin program as the new theme for the 1989 Proof Issue.

The coin’s reverse portrays a bounding red kangaroo surrounded by stylized rays of sunlight and bordered by the inscriptions AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO 1oz. 9999 GOLD, the year-dates 1989 – 2014, and a special Perth Mint mintmark \"P25\" signifying 25 years since the design was first introduced.
