This sale is for a wonderful pair of Georgian era filigree and coral earrings.

This very beautiful and unique pair of earrings date to circa 1780. The medallion face has a delicate and exceptionally fine hand pierced and engraved filigree. These lovely medallions make showy and fashionable earrings but they are also a fine example of a 18th century watchmakers skill. They were made circa 1780 to cover the verge escapement of a fusee pocket watch movement. Yes, these unique pieces of incredible artistry were made for the unseen INSIDE of the watch. It was the 1830\'s when technology introduced a new type of movement that allowed a much thinner and lighter watch and made the chain driven fusee movement obsolete. Jewelers, realizing how beautiful the piercing and engraving were, began to collect these little works of art. They made them into suites of necklaces, bracelets and earrings, occasionally adding gems (garnets and the like) that would cover the small holes where they had been attached to the movement. The piercing and engraving are done on solid brass disks that were then fire gilded in pure gold.

We are professional jewelers with an eye for the unique...we found these two verge covers as part of a group that had been converted into vest buttons in the mid Victorian era, circa 1880. Like jewelers past, we have added gems, in this case they are 4.7mm round, natural coral beads. These beautiful, bright gems are genuine antiques themselves: they came from an old Victorian brooch which was missing too many beads to replace. The medallions are extremely well matched in their style but do vary slightly in size, the larger being 21.1mm, the smaller measuring 20.8mm. They hang 1 and 5/16th inches long in the ear and weigh a comfortable 2.4 total grams or a whisper light 1.2 grams each. For reference, a single US quarter measures 24.2mm in diameter and weighs a much, much heavier 5.7 grams. The earrings are in excellent, ready to wear condition.

After removing the Victorian era thread loop we added the solid 14k vintage style ear wires and catchers using our laser welder. We always use solid 14k so you have good gold for your sensitive ears...we wouldn\'t want less, why would you? You\'ll love the shepherd hook and catch! So easy to use and they give the earrings an eye capturing bit of swing. A few gals have been worried about wearing wires, but have been relieved to find that the \"catchers\" make the earrings very secure. The laser welder is what makes our earrings possible; it\'s a $30,000 machine which fuses the gold and gilt brass together with no sloppy solders or ruinous flame which would melt the delicate filigree. We\'ve been listing our one of a kind earrings for seven plus years now; making jewelry is the only thing we do.We take a great deal of pride in our work, and to show that, we sign our pieces with a tiny \"A\" within a diamond...for \"Ace_of_Diamond\". We stand behind every pair we make and our trademark proves it!

The thing which got me collecting, and still just blows me away, is that every tiny curling vine was cut and engraved free hand by a man sitting in front of a bank of north facing windows...he had no electric light or tools. His day was done when the sun set. That was 220 years ago!! We love that we are the third generation of jewelers to consider these fusee verge cover medallions a functional work of art...first as protection for a watch movement, then as one of a kind buttons. We are proud and honored that we can give these pieces a third life as a pair of truly one of a kind earrings. If these earrings intrigue, please don\'t hesitate...offer now!
