A 19thC. decorated Stoneware Jug, 2-Gallon capacity, New York State origin, ca.1865. Impressed on the shoulder with a cobalt-washed maker\'s stamp: J.A. & C.W. UNDERWOOD / FORT EDWARD, N.Y. A rare 2-year mark, this manufactory was only in operation from 1865 to 1867. See Internet for further information on this short-lived manufactory. 


Front features a large created Bird on sprig design, artistically executed in dark, slip-trailed cobalt. Heavy shading on the wing and tail feathers provide tremendous Folk Art appeal. Salt-Glazed exterior, Albany Slip interior, tooled spout.


Condition: There is a clean handle repair (see close-ups), chip at the base (rear), and a small scar (front, lower left); otherwise Very Good to Excellent with strong color. Some minor discoloration on the glaze surface noted for descriptive accuracy. Displays brilliantly; a highly sought-after decoration by this early NY maker.
