From the estate of Sir Cecil NixonA huge and tall figure of Ananda, partially gilded and covered with lacquer. One of the ten disciples of the Buddha, Ananda is typically portrayed as a handsome youth with closed eyes, tranquil features, and drooping ears. He is often juxtaposed with the elderly Kasyapa, a pairing seen in Chinese Buddhist devotional art since the 4th century.In 17th century Ming dynasty, Ananda was almost always portrayed as a standing figure with clasped hands, garbed in simple robes. This particular statue is no exception: powerfully modeled along minimalistic lines, Ananda appears serene and contemplative.A note on the provenance: This piece once belonged to the collection of Sir Cecil Nixon. In the 1980s it was taken to the Victoria & Albert museum and was appraised by an expert as 18th century Chinese. A subsequently appraisal by a notable London dealer of Chinese works of art placed it as 16th century or earlier.Condition:Excellent antique condition. No damage and no repairs. There is age wear to the gilding of the figure\'s head, and the interior shows significant build-up of rust. Lacquer is still intact. 5. We ship within 1-2 business days. All items are mailed through USPS priority or express mail.
