I am pleased to offer this rare antique miniature pendant locket for your consideration. The oval two-sided locket contains a very detailed miniature sepia and polychrome watercolor painting on milk glass of Britannia with her spear, Union Jack and two ships anchored in the sea behind her. Note the rare use of the color yellow in her helmet and the detailed rigging of the ships. Britannia was the Greek and Roman term for the geographical region of Great Britain and is the name given to the female personification of the island. It is a term still used to refer to the island today. The miniature painting is housed under crystal in a gilt metal locket which is hinged on the reverse. There is moderate wear to the gilding. The crystal on the reverse is missing, but the front crystal is in good shape. The hinged frame on the back works, and the missing crystal could be replaced, providing a compartment for mourning hair or another portrait. The painting itself is in good condition with just a little loss to the upper edge and a few spots here and there (see photos). The spots are actually MUCH lighter in person than they appear in the photos. As it stands, it is a wonderful little work of art that is worthy of any portrait miniature collection.
