These are the two Imperial Guards (Zuijin) that are part of the 15 dolls that makes a full Girls’ Day Festival set. Dressed in brocade silk costumes in the style of the Heian period . They are holding a bow in the left hand and and an arrow in the right. More arrows are Carried in the quiver on their backs. There is always an old and a young guard. One in the higher position and one in the lower.These dolls are in very good condition. They are sitting on black wooden lacquer stools which are attached to their bodies. Each ofthem has a broken thumb. I have put a little “stickum” in their hands so that their bows and arrows will hold in place. The arrows ontheir backs have lost their feathers. They have their original hats, but arrows and bows have been added by me. They measure 9” including arrows. And are about 5”-6” wide depending on flaring kimonos. They have very nice gofun (oyster shell composition.) overwooden heads with glass eyes . Horse hair or human hair. Bodies are straw to which are attached bendable legs and arms. Heads are on a stick that goes down in the straw body and can be removed. The old guy has a stain on his trousers. See photos.
