An outstanding 2Gal. Stoneware Jug, Bennington, Vermont, mid-1800\'s. Julius and his cousin, Edward, used the J&E Norton mark from 1850-1859; the stamp and capacity mark on the shoulder are washed with cobalt. Front features a spectacular Long-Tailed Pheasant perched on a Stump in glassy, extra bold Slip-Trailed Cobalt; there is absolutely no fry on this design! Shiny Salt Glaze covers a highly uncommon, medium-gray base clay for this Vermont maker.Condition: Some light wear on the base and upper spout; otherwise in remarkable, as-made condition with no hairlines, cracks or repaired damage. Small stack marks near the base (lower left and right sides), and a small imperfection below the rim (front) noted for descriptive accuracy.
