A rare, cobalt-decorated Stoneware Jar or Crock for Mustard Storage, 2-Gallon capacity, New York origin, ca.1875. A well-potted, cylindrical form with eased shoulder, tooled rim with integrated inner ledge for a lid, and applied lug handles. Impressed on the shoulder with a crisp, cobalt-washed stamp reading: C. BOESE & CO / Premium Mustard, with a capacity just mark below. NY merchant, Charles Boese, won awards for various prepared mustards in the late-19thC.


Front features a well-executed Bird on a stylized branch in very dark, Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. This Advertising Jar was likely a special order by the merchant from the New York Stoneware Company.


Condition: A thumb-size chip on the base (rear), and shallow rim flake (front, right), as shown; otherwise Excellent. Slight wear on the ledge where a lid would rest noted for descriptive accuracy. No cracks, repaired damage or other excuses. Displays brilliantly; highly-appropriate for the advanced collector. See photos for complete details and please consider them as part of the description. Measures 8-3/4"W x 11-3/4"H overall. The inner and outer rim diameters are 5-1/2" and 6-1/2", respectively; weighs 8.6 lbs.
