A commanding 4Gal. Storage Jar or Crock with elaborate freehand and stenciled cobalt decoration, Western Pennsylvania origin, ca.1875. Cylindrical form with eased shoulder, applied lug handles and tooled rim.

Lower body features the highly sought-after H&J \"Star Pottery\" logo stencil with surrounding text that reads: HAMILTON & JONES / STAR POTTERY / GREENSBORO, PA. Additional brushed accents and a freehand capacity mark (\"4\") below. Upper portion is further embellished with a brushed cobalt vine, a linear flourish, and heavy accents on both handles and rim.

Condition: A shallow chip on the base, and areas of surface discoloration, notably on the reverse side (lower); otherwise in Excellent, as-made condition. Inherent glaze and minor surface imperfections, and slight wear on the upper rim & base noted for complete descriptive accuracy. No cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. Quite large and very heavy; measures 9-3/4\"W x 15\"H overall with a base diameter of 9\". The inner and outer rim diameters are 6-3/4\" and 8-1/4\", respectively; 15.2 lbs!
