Description: An important salt-glazed Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant Decoration, 2-Gallon capacity, New England origin, ca.1860. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder and applied strap handle. Impressed on the shoulder with a cobalt-washed stamp: J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT. This short-lived mark was used only between 1859-1861. See Internet for further information. Front features a very large Pheasant perched in a tree, artistically executed in bold, Slip-Trailed Cobalt.
Condition: Expected rim and base wear, including small flakes and two faint hairlines probably in-the-making, as shown; otherwise in Excellent, as-made condition with strong color and highly sought-after decoration.
