A luthier’s challenge

This a handmade violin by Charles E. Farley (New Boston, NewHampshire). It is his # 99 and dated 1892.As you can see – it’s in need of repair/restoration. See Henley and other reference booksfor information on Chas. E. Farley.

General Description. The violin measures 23 3/8” longoverall. The body measures 14 ¼” long. The upper bouts measure 6 5/8” across and the lower 8 1/8”. The back and sidesare is well-flamed maple. Two-piece back. Very neat purfling. Outstanding scroll. Well-finished interior and wonderful varnish.

The damage. The violin is missing itsfingerboard. There is a chip missing on the lower back base-side wing (seephoto). There is a triangular piece of varnish missing on the back. There is no damage to the wood – just missingvarnish. Cannot explain how this might have happened. There are 3small (front to back) holesin the peg box area (see pics) wheresomeone fastened this violin to a wall. The back of the peg box has a small split – but the sides of the scrollare undamaged.

Summary. Obviously the violin is not inplaying condition. However, all damageis repairable and the violin, with some help from a competent luthier, could beput into playing condition. This is a fine instrument in need of repair/restoration and a new home.
