Offered for sale, a spectacular pair of early ca. 1820 Sheffield silver plate wine or champagne coolers. This pair had been stored away for many decades. They came from an estate in Alexandria, Virginia. The pair of wine coolers measure 10 1/4" tall each and 11" across. They weigh in incredible 6650 grams or 14 lbs. 10 3/4 ounces. The tops are there but the inserts are missing. The handle decorations are of Grecian bearded men or mythological faces. There are grape clusters with leaves and vines on the top ring and around the base. The lower portion of the wine coolers feature acanthus leaves. The underside has a markers mark with an anchor that has a circle or ring on top. The interior of the body has a number on each piece of the coolers. One is marked #1 and the other is #2. Both top rings have Sterling silver portions that are indicative of very early Sheffield silver on copper pieces. The sterling silver portions feature the family crest SINE MACULA. The meaning is "without blemish". It appears to be from the Carey Family however there may be others who may have used this as a family crest. The sterling silver was placed at the monogrammed area so that the mono would not cut into copper.
