Somali Republic - Set of Six Legal Tender $1 Guitar Coins - 2004 - Silver Plated
Many know about piracy off the coast of Somalia and the disarray of any government there. However, not many know of these coins.
The Republic of Somalia issued these multi-colored guitar coins dated 2004 to commemorate fifty years of Rock and Roll. This is a complete 6 piece set. Since these are no longer being made they are getting harder and harder to find. These multi-color guitar coins are designed after famous electric guitars and include the classic and fantastic red and white Gibson Les Paul.
The 6 multi-colored Guitar coins have proved extremely popular with coin collectors, guitar enthusiasts, Rock \'n Roll fans and the general public. Set also includes an Amierican Flag Stars and Stripes Gibson Flying V, a black Gibson Flying V (a favorite of rock musicians from Jimi Hendrix to Metallica), the Gary Glitter guitar (a wild looking pink star Guitar used by various rock stars including Abba), a blue Gibson X-Plorer and a gorgeous yellow Klein.
Are they coins? Indeed, yes, in the sense that some dealer/distributor had a contract with whomever represented or claimed to represent the government of Somalia at that time about producing and selling these \"legal tender\" pieces. The coins are 1 dollar legal tender issued by the Somali Republic athough they probably have really never circulated there as collector items would not be in circulation in virtually any country.
These fun, colorful collector legal tender 1$ coins are approximately 45mm (1.75 inches) long.The coins are copper nickel in composition and silver plated. The obverse is then enameled gold in colorful guitar designs.
The reverse reads \"ONE DOLLAR, SOMALI REPUBLIC, 2004\" postioned around a crest.
These are minted in England.
