Listed this week is an amazing and very fine estate collection of Chinese jade and stone carvings that includes some interesting and fine scholarly stone objects. There are some fabulous and rarely found pieces listed including items with Museum provenance, I believe being some of the finest carvings I have offered. Collections such as this do not come up for sale very often, this is surely a sale not to be missed!

Up for sale is a Very Rare and Important 12thc Cambodian Khmer Angkor Period Carved Sandstone Figure of Vishnu. This carving is a fine and fully guaranteed authentic period example. The carving is beautifully carved throughout with a fine period design. The carving has particularly fine carved details to the face and hat. The sandstone has a beautiful old patina throughout. The figure is in three pieces as you can see which all perfectly fit together. The figure was displayed at the estate standing on a large wooden pedestal with hole carved for the base portion that was custom made for this figure. This pedestal was to large and heavy for me to take and ship but one could be made to display this amazing figure is one desired. It is nice to know that the figure does stand and stay together nice and stable. The figure is a large size example and is an incredible and powerful display piece measuring 38 1/2 inches long in total, and 30 1/2 inches long to the bottom of the feet. The figure is in three pieces, which is quite commonly found, actually on many examples I have seen they just sell the torso, or the feet portion is missing so this figure is actually quite intact. This figure has a total heavy stone weight of 45.4 pounds.

Provenance: This figure has very good provenance. The figure is from the estate of the late John. Russell of Kingston Ontario. Russell was a well known and highly respected knowledgeable antique and antiquity dealer from the 1950’s to 1990’s period. Russell was on the board of appraisers for the national gallery of Canada. Russell was also appointed to the board that found important antique gifts for Queen Elizabeth, Charles and Diana and other important dignitaries. Russell’s collection was well documented by him with this figure noted as being purchased by Russell in the year 1970 in Bangkok and as being 10-12th century Khmer Angkor period. I have been commissioned to sell this figure and other estate contents with absolutely as all my sales have run for upwards of ten years selling online. I have found some comparable examples that have sold at high-end sales as seen in the pictures. In my opinion this figure would sell for somewhere in the 50-100 thousand dollar range if offered in the right venue. I have seen some that sold well over 100 thousand dollars. This is a very rare opportunity to acquire a rarely found and valuable Museum quality example.
