In 2015 Brauer Museum at Valparaiso University held an exhibit showcasing five Japanese Friendship Dolls originally sent to the U.S. in 1927. (Originally there were 58, one for each province in Japan, 45 are known to exist today.) This book is the companion catalog to the Brauer exhibit. This may be the only English language book devoted to this subject. This book is scholarly, but easy to read and provides a historical context for the creation of these dolls. It explains the how and why of their creation and gives extensive detail about each of the 58 dolls and where they are today. As a collector of Japanese dolls this book in invaluable, giving the reader a greater understanding of the doll making art form tradition in Japan. My only criticism is that there are not enough photographs of the actual dolls in the exhibit and their accessories. A miss, since the show did not travel to other areas. One of the dolls is in the Brauer Museum’s permanent collection, the rest are scattered in museums and private collections across the U.S.Read full review

I have read many articles and books on this subject, but this book is the ultimate resource on this subject. If you want to understand the background of the Friendship (Ambassador) dolls and the history of the devout Gulick family, it is very well covered here. The book describes the dolls artistically, along with extensive information about them from the 1920's and now. This book is the most comprehensive on the Friendship doll mission I have read.. If you do not know the story of the doll exchange between the United States and Japan, you should read this book. If you are familiar with the subject, you too will certainly enjoy this book. I love this quote from the book "We who desire peace must write it in the hearts of children" Sidney Gulick Amen. Shared this book with two doll clubs.Read full review
