JAPANESE YOROI BATTLE HORSE & SAMURAI Meiji Antique Musha
Japanese samurai warrior musha ningyo doll on kazari-uma or
battle horse, Meiji period (1868-1912).
Nice detail in all respects from armor
to steed. The samurai’s fierce countenance is apparent on the
rendered gofun face. Traditionally, this horse and Samurai would be made for
Boys’ Day, celebrated annually in Japan on May 5.
Horse description and
Japanese Armour Yoroi Kazari-uma Battle Horse. The body of the horse is
covered in soft white fur, traditional for these
dolls. The ears are leather.
The eyes are glass. The mane and tail are genuine hair. One of the front feet,
the hoof area, has a weakness problem. My friend who fixes these
said they are repaired by inserting a tooth
pick through the area. This needs
to be done so that the horse can always stand firm. The bridle is sewn and
turned with the seam outside and is silk. It is held onto the head by a little metal
piece at each end which fits
into a round ring at the rear of the horse’s
mouth. Beautiful orange-red fringe
decorating the horse is in great
condition. The saddle is all leather. There is
soft leather under the rider that has little flowers on it and panels
leather that hang down on either side. You can see the threads on the hoofs that once held
Please note that in the second picture the body hair is dangling on the horse's head. I pushed it back in place
for the other pictures. One of the horse's back legs, which is still very very strong, needs to be reshaped a little
so that it lands on the ground closer to the tail area.
The Samurai helmet is a black hand shaped material (gofun?)
with genuine leather flaps on each side that have
little flowers on them. The
remainder of the helmet is metal with thread details. His face is hand carved
he has genuine black hair on his head and beard. There are metal epaulets
on his shoulders that have a little raised
running leaf design at long each end.
There are two pieces (heavy paper) hanging off of each epaulet. The top one
his left shoulder has separated. His upper body shirt is orange silk with tiny
gold flower leaves and designs.
His breast and back armor is metal with a
tooled design along the front and along the top of the back. His belt
silk. His pants are green silk. There is wear in the knee area of the green
pants. His stockings are cloth
with dots and his shoes have real black fur at
the toes. Whatever the Samurai was holding in his hands is no
