LARGE & RARE MING DYNASTY ANTIQUE CHINESE GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA VAIROCANA
Price: US $24988.00
We are pleased to offer for sale a rare and very fine example of Ming Dynasty Bronze Buddhist Sculpture. This example, measuring approximately 13.75 inches tall, shows Vairocana, a celestial deity and the central representative of the five qualities of Buddha. We see Vairocana crowned as a prince, but wearing the robes of a monk - embodying the concept of sunyata.
This bronze statue has a unique regal crown, with a triple-leaf jeweled setting at the center of the crown suggestive of a Mid-Ming Dynasty date. Later periods saw the loss of the elaborate triple-leaf design at the center, as is seen on most crowned bronzes from the Yongle and Xuande Periods onwards.
Such figures of Vairocana, are one of the more rare seen bronzes of Buddha, not surviving in large numbers with most being seized by authorities and melted down for weapons or coinage.
Buddhas like this have very much been in-demand for the last few years and are becoming extremely difficult to find and even more so at an affordable price, especially when they are of such a large display-size. Authenticity is guaranteed so please feel comfortable offerding with confidence.
Here we see a very similarly cast figure of Vairocana, which although larger, is slightly later in date by evidence of the crown.[link removed by ]
Here is a similarly cast figure of another representation of buddha and of comparable size, but without the lotus base. Age, as determined by the crown and casting would be comparable.[link removed by ]
This shows a smaller and more crudely cast figure from a similar workshop and period.[link removed by ]
There is the wear to the bronze and to the previous lacquer gilding throughout with some encrustation and deterioration to the patina, but overall the condition is very good and is better than one would expect for a figure from the 15th-16th century. The condition is consistent with its age. The investment potential is very good for this type of figure.
