This Outstanding and Beautiful DrakeGreen-Winged Teal duckdecoy up for sale is one of the Special Series of Decorative decoys that Herter's produced during the time that the sales of their working decoys had run its course and was disappearing quickly. The Herter's Model 1893 line of Wood Duck and Waterfowl Decoys, was a line of decorative decoys that the Waseca, Minnesota company launched in 1965 and manufactured them through around 1980. Unlike this decoy up for sale, many were cold-stamped HERTER'S, INC. 1893. The series was comprised of all Drake decoys and over the course of the production run they manufactured 31 different species of Waterfowl. During the time that these Model 1893 decoys were made, from roughly 1965 to 1980, different species of male ducks had various production runs. For instance, Drake Wood Ducks were part of their assortment from 1971 until the line of decoys was canceled in c1980. This decoy up for sale has one of themore realisticpaint schemesthat any of the various species would be afforded. This excellent little decoy has a mix of air-brushed detail paint and hand done detail brush work. The hand painting gives nice detail to the wing and tail areas and the breast, back and sides all have wonderful air-brushed detail. The Head on this teal has very nice carving that is so fine that it gives the appearance of feathering with the textured surface.

Herter's, which operated primarily as a mail order company in addition to their Waseca, Minnesota headquarters and flag-ship store, years later also opened a satellite location in Mitchell, South Dakota. Both store locations offered these Model 1892 decoys, in addition to obviously being available as a mail order item. Thus, the decoys can be found with no price tags on the bottom, as well as many that either have the Waseca or Mitchell store price stickers on them. These decoyswere produced around and roughly the same time period as the majority of the production run of Wildfowler decoys that were manufactured in Babylon,New York. While Wildfowler had no retail outletsof their own at the time, the Massa's were successful at marketing their decorative Wildfowler decoys through retailers like Ethan Allen, Flower Time (which became Franks Nursery and Crafts), Burdines, Bullocks and Macys. Herter's and Wildfowler had been very successful at producing, marketing and selling hunting decoys until the advent of plastic decoys began to gradually capture the lion's share of the hunting decoy market in the late 1960's. To supplementthe sagging sales of their wood and cork hunting decoys that was permanently being replaced by plastic decoys, both Herter's and Wildfowler aggressively attacked the decorative decoy market and this DrakeGreen-Winged Tealdecoy up for sale is one of those earlyentrants into the decorative decoy market. The decorative decoymarket segment lasted several years, but was not a long-term and viable option to replace their hunting decoy market, whichinvariably contributed to the demise of both companies as hunting decoys was one of their core sales and margin productcategories. This decoy is in excellent condition with absolutely no edge rubbing from handling and basically in mint, pristine condition without even a hint of fading to the paint; it is just that mint. The decoy is 12-3/8" long x 3-5/8" wide x 4-3/8" tall and weighs 12-ozs. Nice piece of the evolvinghistory of decoys to add to your collection of wood duck decoys and shorebirds.
