This vintage item is for One (1)original vintage FW WOOLWORTH ICE CREAM SODA FOUNTAIN lunch counter sign c1950s. This Root Beer float consists of of Vanilla ice cream, Root Beer Soda and whipped cream. The ice cream soda was invented by Robert McCay Green inPhiladelphia, PA, in 1874 during the sesquicentennial celebration. Thetraditional story is that, on a particularly hot day, Mr. Green ran out of coldice for the flavored sodas he was selling and used vanilla ice cream from aneighboring vendor, thus inventing a new drink. Thank god for that!Measures in inches 6\" x 13.5\". Made by Schmidt Litho SF USA. Made ofthick cardboard and stamped FW Woolworth Co. on back. The F. W. Woolworth Company (often referred to asWoolworth\'s, or Woolworth) was a retail company that was one of the originalpioneers, and arguably the most successful American and internationalfive-and-dime stores, setting trends and creating the modern retail model whichstores follow worldwide today.

The F.W. Woolworth Co. sold discounted general merchandiseat fixed prices, usually five or ten cents, undercutting the prices of otherlocal merchants. Woolworth, as the stores popularly became known, was one ofthe first American retailers to put merchandise out for the shopping public tohandle and select without the assistance of a sales clerk. Earlier retailershad kept all merchandise behind a counter and customers presented the clerkwith a list of items they wished to buy.
