The is an ORIGINAL USMC Disston Entrenching Machete (square tip) and the "Holy Grail" of the machetes issued to Marines prior to and during WWII.The square tipped "entrenching" (or "intrenching" as M.H. Cole refers to it at page 40 of his Military Knives, Bayonets and Machetes, Book III)machete is a Disston 11.5" machete, marked "USMC" in a olive drab canvas(which was painted white) and leather scabbard, which is unmarked.The machete is in very good used condition, with the wooden handle intact with all four rivets. The scabbard is in good used condition too, but the leather tipis dry flaked open, as often is the case (see image below). The throat of the scabbard is tight and the machete is firmly secured when inserted.This is an increasingly rare item of "782" or "deuce" gear for the advanced Marine collector, which first shows up in the 1938 editionof the "Landing-Force Manual".
