About the Casas Grandes culture and Casas Grandes effigy vessels:The Casas Grandes culture, centered around Paquimé in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, flourished from about AD 1200 to AD 1450, and is noteworthy for its very obvious Mesoamerican traits, including ballcourts and macaws, in addition to its striking effigy vessels in the forms of humans and animals.
Early Casas Grandes pottery was similar to the red and brown wares of the Mogollon, the culture credited with first constructing the site. These are often decorated with red geometric designs, usually banded. Later, distinctive polychrome varieties appeared, perhaps under the influence of West Mexican Nayarit or Jalisco pottery. Effigy bowls and vessels were often formed in the shape of a painted human or animal figure. Animals and birds dominate the style in both cultures. Effigy vessels often served as containers for liquids or other materials, but also had certain symbolic purposes which were considered magical, religious or ceremonial.
