This \"Century Old\" decoy was one of the last or later decoys made by the Mason Decoy Factory in Detroit, Michigan and is a Glass Eye, Standard Grade Drake Canvasback Duck Decoy. The Glass eye model was their Best grade of the standard model of wood decoy, one above the tack eye and 2 above the painted eye version. It was carved solid and hand-made and hand-painted c1920, a few years before the company closed its doors and was eventually sold. Of the several wood decoy factories in Detroit, Mason would outlive them all and have a 30 year existence. This decoy is structurally in Mint 100% original condition and as you can see this decoy retains its awesome brush marks and paint swirls from the day an artist painted it some 95 years ago; even the \"Awesome Scalloping to the Black Breast Paint and Black Tail Paint where both areas transition into the back and side white paint flawlessly. This beautiful scalloped edge paint is awesome and not all glass-eye decoys were afforded detailing this beautiful, and even fewer had this flawless scalloping to the breast like only Mason could execute this nicely. This Outstanding, Fantastic Decoy has clearly been in Fine Collections Since it was Made and they were all clearly temperature controlled and certainly not subject to direct sunlight because this beautiful paint shows no fading whatsoever and it is Clean and Gorgeous!! The reason that I suspect that this decoy was never gunned over is that the line-tie hole on the iron weight shows no signs that was ever anything tied there; it looks immaculate and pristine. Any way you look at it, this decoy is one of the Nicer and Unique, Standard Grade Drake Canvasbacks that you\'ll come across in the standard grade, and even rarer with this later paint and wonderfully carved head and body that is perfectly contoured and flows with incredible symmetry. The heads on these Mason\'s were attached to the bodies with scored dowels and the quality control on standard models where the attachment wasn\'t flush was simply hid with a quick swath of putty to fill and then evened flush. All Standard decoys were carved solid and hand-made and hand-painted and this Canvasback is one of the Scarcest Standard Grade Canvasbacks you will see as it is one of the later decoys you will ever see. Of the several wood decoy factories in Detroit, Mason would outlive them all and have a 30 year existence. This decoy is structurally in Excellent 100% Original Condition and as you can see this decoy retains all of the awesome brush marks, nicely swathed tail paint, breast scalloping and paint swirls from the day an artist painted it some almost a century ago; even the \"Awesome Paint Detail\". The paint on this decoy is thick, original and artfully textured paint.

ALL OF THE BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL PAINT ON THIS CANVASBACK IS BRIGHT, CLEAN AND AS CLEAR OTHER THAT SCATTERED SMALL RUBS!!! EVEN THE ORIGINAL RED GLASS EYES ARE PERFECTLY INTACT AND IN IN PERFECT CONDITION!!

This decoy displays wonderfully and based on the fact that it is in such excellent condition, I am sure that this decoy was prominently featured somewhere in very distinguished collections for its entire existence; and all of the collections that highlighted it were most likely all temperature-controlled environments since it was bought from Mason almost a century ago. The Beautiful, Antique & Original Red Glass Eyes are perfectly intact and most of the original neck putty is perfectly intact and in excellent condition. Many Mason Decoys had some type of loss to the original neck putty, which is quite normal as a great many of the vintage Mason decoys that you see have had some type of restoration or replacement done to their neck putty; but not this beautiful decoy; this Rare and Exceptional Drake Canvasback Decoy retains much of neck putty, although not a lot was used as the neck shelf was carved perfectly to accept the awesome head!! This decoy is as solid as the day it was made with a head that is perfectly attached to the head as if made yesterday with a negligible play to it. Additionally, this decoy is in outstanding original condition with beautiful and fully intact original paint as you can see in the pictures, and overall it is very dry and nice old and original paint with a beautiful, clean and matte-burnished sheen and patina to it from being handled over the years that it is nice and clean. The outstanding patina on this decoy really is superb and although it is very hard to capture it in photos, I think a few of the close-up pictures capture the wonderful \"character\" that the surface that this antique and important old gunning decoy has. The original paint was done exceptionally and as you can see by the many photos, the famous Mason Paint Brush Marks, Feather Swirls, Detail Swaths, Paint Swirls and Wonderful Detail Feathering is visible, especially on the scalloped breast, tail and head, as well as the awesomely wet-on-wet paint detail. This Scarce and awesome drake Canvasback decoy measures 16\" long x 5\" wide x 7-1/4\" tall and weighs 2-lbs. exactly, although the cast iron weight accounts for 5-6 ounces of that. A very scarce and outstanding decoy that will complement any collection of vintage duck and shorebird decoys from a company that represents as big a part of American Decoy History as any other maker or carver. Thanks for looking and if you have any additional questions or would like another photo feel free to email me. The Very Nice, Original Glass Eyes are nicely carved in and located and the paint on the black and red-brown head looks awesome. The Scarce Drake Canvasback decoy up for sale Doesn\'t Even have much edge wear, which is also great to find!! The outstanding patina on this decoy really is excellent and although it is very hard to capture it in photos, but you can use the zoom feature in this listing to get a good look at the wonderful \"character\" that the surface that this antique and important old gunning decoy has. Again, this decoy have the like-new line tie on the weight, and based on this Gorgeous Condition I doubt if it was ever gunned over; and if it was it couldn\'t have been more than a handful of times and it was also extremely well cared for from the day it was made. The original paint was done extremely well and as you can see by the many photos, the famous Mason Paint Brush Marks are intact and have almost all of the thick original paint perfectly intact. But even more awesome is the scalloped breast paint, which is always a bonus on the standard grade decoys and it looks beautiful!! This decoy is in excellent 100% Original Condition!! An outstanding decoy that will complement any collection of vintage duck and shorebird decoys from a company that represents as big a part of American Decoy History as any other maker or carver. Thanks for looking and if you have any additional questions or would like another photo feel free to email me.
