One of my favorite compact companies, Ripley & Gowen from Attleboro, Massachusetts made this beautiful compact! It measures 2-1/8\" wide and 2-1/4\" tall. The chain adds another 5-3/4\" as the lady would have put her wrist through the chain to carry it. Both sides are a pretty yellow guilloche (shiny/glassy) enamel with a nice design under the enamel. The front has pink, yellow and purple enamel flowers with green leaves. The back is all yellow. The shape of the compact is a \"step\" shape. It opens by pushing the clasp at the top. One side has the powder section and the opposite side has the lift up section that reveals a mirror and the rouge, still there with puff. It\'s marked R&G Co. in very tiny letters along the rim of the inside mirror. Ripley & Gowen did make sterling compacts, but usually marked them sterling, so I\'m saying that this compact is a silver color with a gold colored inside. It is not a lightweight compact and the chain has a nice link design. No chips or flakes or damage at all to the enamel, it is very shiny. Ripley & Gowen made wonderful compacts in the late 1920s and early 1930s in this style, some had lipsticks or attached finger rings. Always fun to find their compacts, especially in this condition!
