TheOrder of the Iron Crown was instituted on 5 June 1805 by Napoleon Bonaparte,following his coronation as the King of Italy.With the collapse of Napoleon’s empire, Imperial Austria regained itstraditional control over Lombardy, and on 7 April 1815 Emperor Franz I replacedthe Iron Crown with a civil and military order of merit but retained itsoriginal name. The order was awarded in 3 classes for distinguished military serviceduring both peacetime and wartime conditions as well as for distinguished civilservice. With the collapse of theAustro-Hungarian Empire in after WWII the Order Iron Crown was formallyabolished.
