Offered in this sale is by far the finest and nicest piece of American yellow ware that I have had the pleasure to offer for sale on . It is a very early glazed yellow ware dog figure that I would date to the mid to perhaps earlier 1800s. It is not marked in any way, however, it has an old paper label taped on the inside (see 2nd image) with the name HODGSON which I assume indicates that this was once in the collection of Jacqueline D. Hodgson whose lifelong collection of important American ceramics was sold by Sotheby Parke Bernet on January 22, 1974 in a sale titled THE JACQULINE D. HODGSON COLLECTION OF IMPORTANT AMERICAN CERAMICS. Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of the catalog for reference to see if in fact this piece was sold at that sale. The dog measures roughly 7\" tall x 7 3/8\" at its widest. As you can see from the photos shot from the underside, this piece is hollow with fairly thin fragile walls. It has a primitive \"folk\" like look to it. The condition is outstanding. I\'ve looked it over with a loupe and can find only one tiny glaze flea bite of the back base edge of the right foot which you have to hunt to find. The rarity and condition of this piece makes it a must have piece for any collection of early American ceramics.
