HGST ULTRASTAR 7K6000 HUS726060AL4211 6TB 7200 RPM SAS 12Gb/s 3.5-INCH ENTERPRISE HARD DRIVE - 4Kn / 4096-BYTE SECTORS
READ THIS FIRST - THE 4Kn WARNINGThis drive uses 4096-byte LOGICAL sectors. That is what the 4 in HUS726060AL4211 means, and we confirmed it by reading the drive rather than assuming it from the part number: smartctl reports "Logical block size: 4096 bytes".
This matters more than anything else in this listing:- It is NOT the same as 512e. A 512e drive presents 512-byte logical sectors to your system. This one presents 4096-byte logical sectors.- Many older RAID controllers will refuse it outright.- Some operating systems and imaging tools assume 512-byte logical blocks and will not handle it.- You generally cannot mix it into an existing array of 512-byte drives.
If you know you want 4Kn, this is a very clean example. If you are not sure, please check your controller before buying rather than after. We would rather answer a question than take a return.
THIS DRIVE IS EFFECTIVELY UNUSEDIt reached us with 12 power-on hours on it. Lifetime totals at that point: about 2 GB read and 0.3 GB written. For a 6 TB enterprise drive that is shelf-spare territory - racked, powered briefly, and never put to work.
It now reads 38 hours. The extra 26 are ours: a full 6 TB zero-fill that took 10 hours 13 minutes, plus the time it sat powered in the chassis while the other drives in the same batch finished. 38 is the number you will read on arrival, which is why 38 is the number in the title.
WHAT THE SMART DATA ACTUALLY SAYS
Serial NAGLA77XPower-on hours: 38Grown defect list: 0Uncorrected errors: 0 read / 0 write / 0 verifyNon-medium errors: 0Background-scan rewrite events: 0SMART health: OKFirmware: B519Logical sector size: 4096 bytes (4Kn)Negotiated link rate: 12.0 Gb/sLifetime read before our testing: about 2 GBLifetime written before our testing: about 0.3 GBManufactured: week 14 of 2015
Every counter on this drive is zero. That is unusual enough that we want to be clear about what it does and does not mean: it means the drive has essentially no wear and no defects. It does not mean it is new, and we are not selling it as new - it is a 2015-manufactured drive that sat somewhere for years before reaching us.
HOW WE TESTEDCatalogued with smartctl before anything was written to it, then given a full-length zero overwrite of every logical block with dd until the device reported end-of-media, then catalogued again. A complete 6 TB write is the test that finds weak sectors. Every error counter read 0 before and 0 after.
DATA SANITIZATIONEvery logical block was overwritten with zeros, running until the drive itself reported end-of-media. We then read back the start, middle and end and confirmed all three contained zero non-zero bytes. The per-drive log records RESULT: WIPE VERIFIED OK. It arrives fully zeroed with no partition table.
INTERFACE NOTEThis is a SAS drive. It will NOT work in a SATA port. You need a SAS controller or backplane - and one that supports 4Kn.
WHAT YOU GETOne (1) bare 3.5-inch SAS hard drive, the exact serial listed above. No caddies, no trays, no rails, no screws, no cables, no adapters.
WARRANTYOut of warranty. No manufacturer support.
SOLD AS-ISSold as-is with no returns. Everything we measured is printed above. The 4Kn sector format is stated in the title, at the top of this description, and in the item specifics - please make sure your hardware supports it before buying.
