Description:

Microsoft Windows Vista Release Candidate 1 (RC1) was the final major pre-release version of the Windows Vista operating system, released in September 2006 to mark the transition from beta testing to final product availability. Built on the 5600.16384 codebase, it was distributed to over 5 million users through the Customer Preview Program (CPP), MSDN, and TechNet for broad industry and consumer testing.

Key characteristics of Windows Vista RC1 include:

  • Significant Stability Improvements: It addressed many critical issues present in earlier builds like Beta 2, with reviewers noting the elimination of egregious bugs and improved application compatibility.

  • Refined User Account Control (UAC): The security feature was tuned to be less intrusive, such as preventing it from stealing focus from active applications, though it remained a point of criticism.

Performance Enhancements: Installation speeds were drastically reduced (to approximately 30 minutes), and overall system performance was reported to be comparable to or faster than Windows XP on capable hardware.
  • Final Feature Set: It included the finalized user interface, Windows Aero graphics, Internet Explorer 7, and core security features like BitLocker and Windows Defender, while omitting scrapped features like WinFS.

Microsoft targeted volume license customers for availability in November 2006, with general consumer availability scheduled for January 2007. RC1 served as the primary foundation for the final RTM (Release to Manufacturing) build, which was released in early 2007.
