    Took some time to get firmware updated but works great

    I ran into issues being able to update the system firmware using the unbranded Bios and UEFI. Once I manually installed the Dell branded BIOS everything worked smoothly. Run Proxmox data center with 5 virtual machines with no issue.

    Home Lab Server

    I'm really liking this Dell R710. It is a pretty powerful box for a good price. I was concerned about how loud it might be - but it turns out the 2U design means the fans are pretty quiet. It's really only on a cold boot where it gets loud for just a few minutes. I'm using this to learn Docker, to run some home automation services, and to run a Plex Media Server. Also, the vendor did a good job of delivering it in a timely manner and it was packaged well.

    Great starter server, but beware of updates!

    It's a great starter server if you're getting into the hobby. It's a bit old if you're a serious enthusiast, but if you want to get started it's just right. I was actually surprised at how well designed it was, with easy to understand instructions and easy to remove pieces. Be warned though, it's not easy updating the BIOS firmware, SAS card, or iDrac controller. You'll need to use a guide.
