Story of this Art:Long before cards were ever shuffled or games played, there was a world caught in an endless twilight. A realm called Erythranox. Once a fertile land of emerald forests and singing rivers, its skies turned bruised and tempest‑scarred when the Great Sundering occurred: a cosmic convergence of celestial bodies that bathed the world in a blood‑red glow.
Scientists and alchemists jittered with arcane fright: the sun’s light, vital to life, dimmed, and in its place, a dark orb pulsed with fiery vehemence. Shadows lengthened unnaturally. Ancient ruins, long buried beneath sands and vines, began to resonate with murmurs from lost ages.
From these ruins rose a new breed of beings: the Vesperae, vampires not of folklore, but forged by the dying radiance of Erythranox’s twin eclipsed suns. These beings were the children of twilight, their veins coursing with embers of the red sky. Neither fully alive nor wholly dead. Their hunger was primordial, an appetite tied not just to blood, but to the very essence of the fading world.
As the Vesperae multiplied, they carved out bastions of obsidian spires and obsidian‑laced stone — fortresses where dusk was eternal, and their rule unchallenged. Each night, the red‑smeared sky would bleed into view, and with it came the Apocalypse of Red, an unending dusk that heralded both despair and strange new vitality for the undead.
Legends say that these creatures understand the ebb and flow of life and death not just as predator and prey, but as balance and upheaval. Their existence sparked both dread and awe among the scattered survivors who clung to twilight’s edge, crafting art and myth around the crimson horizon imagery so vivid it would later be etched into gaming mats and play surfaces for tabletop battles, long after the real wars ceased.
In the art you see on the playmat the fiery sky, the looming dark orb, and the sharp silhouettes is the final sunset of Erythranox; a reminder of how light and darkness collide, and how legends are born from cosmic upheaval.
